What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise physiologists specialise in clinical exercise interventions for participants with a broad range of health conditions. It involves individualised assessment, exercise prescription, and physical activity education for participants at high risk of developing, or with existing, chronic and complex medical conditions, disabilities, and injuries.

Exercise physiologists provide lifestyle modifications using behavioural change strategies to optimise function and quality of life and empower the participant to self-manage their condition through regular and appropriate exercise. These interventions are exercise-based and include health and physical activity education, advice and support.

Our experienced exercise physiologists are able to provide evidenced-based therapy due to their extensive training and qualifications, wide range of experiences, and our internal professional development program. For more specific information about our exercise physiologists’ individual experience and areas of expertise, you can view Our Expertise.

Exercise physiologists frequently work closely with other allied health professionals to provide complementary services to achieve a participant’s goals.

Differentiating between an exercise physiologist and a physiotherapist can be quite difficult, as the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Physiotherapists can use manual and physical assessment skills to diagnose and deliver interventions. Exercise physiologists primarily utilise exercise to treat a predetermined diagnosis. Exercise physiologists often work as part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors, physiotherapists, and other allied health professionals to ensure the best clinical outcomes for their participants.

Exercise physiologists work with a range of conditions including musculoskeletal  (e.g. fractures, arthritis, chronic pain), cardiorespiratory (e.g. asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD), neurological (e.g. cerebral palsy, stroke, epilepsy) and mental health conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, anxiety and depression, intellectual disabilities and ADHD.

We would love to talk to you about your career and how we can support you.

We are able to provide services at home, in schools, the workplace, in our offices, at supported accommodation centres and via Telehealth.
