Positive Behaviour Support

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Our positive behaviour support services address behaviours of concern to improve a participant’s self-esteem, confidence, and self-efficacy to enable them to achieve their personal and life goals, improve their relationships, reduce behaviours negatively impacting on them and others, and enhance their overall quality of life.

Our services involve a collaborative assessment with the participant, including family members and supports, development of a Positive Behaviour Support Plan, and relevant training to implement the recommended strategies to address the behaviours of concern.

We have extensive experience working with paediatric, adult and aged care participants, all types of disabilities and behaviour presentations, including those with restrictive practices. We also have experienced and bilingual positive behaviour support practitioners across multiple disciplines to assist with more complex presentations and situations including children in care, forensics, and severe and persistent mental illness.

Our experienced behaviour support practitioners are able to provide evidenced-based therapy due to their extensive training and qualifications, wide range of experiences, and our internal professional development program. For more specific information about our behaviour support practitioners’ individual experience and areas of expertise, you can view  Our Expertise.

Behaviour support practitioners frequently work closely with other allied health professionals to provide complementary services to achieve a participant’s goals.

Good News Story

Arthur was referred to ORS to help build his confidence in speaking with others due to a condition called Selective Mutism. ORS’ Positive Behaviour Support State Manager, Erin Bowcock, walks us through Arthur’s journey, and he tells us how he “feels so much happier” after receiving this life-changing support from ORS.

Behaviour support focuses on improving quality of life and reducing behaviours of concern using a broad range of evidence-based approaches. This includes a large focus on changing the environment and working with a participant’s supports. Behaviour support practitioners come from diverse allied health and professional backgrounds and are registered through the NDIS Commission. Psychology focuses on the assessment and treatment of mental health presentations and psychologists are registered through AHPRA.

Yes, positive behaviour support practitioners work with existing supports across different environments including the home, education and activities in the community. With a participant’s consent, all supports are consulted in the development of the plan and are provided training on the implementation of strategies.

A restrictive practice is any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with a disability. Restrictive practices may only be used as a last resort to protect a person with a disability or others from harm. The use of restrictive practices must be outlined in a Behaviour Support Plan.

The NDIA is currently introducing PACE as an upgrade from the current customer management system. The primary objective of PACE is to enhance the NDIS experience for both participants and providers. It aims to deliver superior support creating a more efficient and effective service.

There are multiple ways a participant or nominee can endorse ORS. Have a look at the different options and commonly asked questions here
